The Audity One is a pure class A tube amp with a 7025 (12AX7A) preamp tube driving an EL84 (6BQ5) in the output stage, with a 7025 for the cathode-driven tremolo effect. the controls are volume [v], tone [t] and tremolo speed [s]. Output is about 8 watts, and the class A power gives this amp a nice distortion with a smooth break up starting at about the 12:00 position. The speaker is a Weber Alnico Signature 10s, which is the closest to the original CTS speaker in the Kalamazoo Model Two, which for all practical purposes is the technological predecessor of the Audity One.
One of the unique features of this amp is the tube cage, which allows better ventilation for the tubes and helps prevent the chassis from overheating. The reason the amplifier is designed this way was to allow it to be tipped on its back. Why tip the amp on its back? Well, small amps are notoriously small-sounding (imagine that). This is because the poor little dudes just don't have the speaker surface or cabinet size to produce the low end that their bigger brothers can. But when you apply a little physics and tip a small amp on its back, it uses the floor as an amplifying surface; thus, the bass response dramatically increases and a small amp sounds like a much bigger one. The Kalamazoo Model Two can be used this way to great effect, but with one drawback -- the amp would overheat because of the location of the tubes in the back beneath the chassis.
The Curious Audity One is the ideal amplifier for small recording spaces like many of us are now accustomed: bedrooms, basements, apartments and so on. Along with the ability to tip it on its back for better low end response, it features a direct line out, post-output transformer (not preamp), so you're getting a much closer version of the amp's tone. Put a mic on it, use the direct out, or both.
The Curious Audity One is built to order, and you can even choose the color if green doesn't suit you (sorry no chrome, currently). Please specify with your order if you would like a different color.
